Montecristo is one of the most recognized brands in the world and is agreed that is synonymous with Cuban cigars. The line No. 4 is one my favorites of the brand and certainly one of the most popular in general. I was gifted those by my friend Marco – thanks a lot mate. I haven’t had a Monte in a long time and after resting these for about couple weeks, one beautiful evening I grabbed one to enjoy and offer you my thoughts.

It has an oily and velvety wrapper with couple engraved veins and a few raised spots. Of course in the whole appearance the Cuban style triple cap and the famous brown and white band couldn’t be missing. The stick is spongy and was two or three soft spots. It smells delicious, sweet aged tobacco with a faint wood aroma. From the foot I get an odor similar to the one from a tea bag. The draw is tight but that doesn’t surprise since I get that a lot in sticks coming from the holly island.

Lights up easy. The first few puffs are a bit spicy and earthy, but not for long. After the first ½ inch the stogie smoothes out and the earthiness disappear. It now becomes sweet with deep wood and leather notes. Passing the half way point the spice returns giving the Monte a nice kick which seems to fit perfectly to the cocoa and nutty mixture.

Not only the No.4 is a small cigar but is a fast burning one as well. It lasted around 40 minutes and the whole time it was producing a thick cloud of aromatic smoke and a solid dark grey ash that was holding over an inch each time. The burn was raiser sharp and maintenance free.

I know in Europe they complain a lot about the price of this specific stogie and maybe they are right. It seems a little pricy for its size, but at the end of the day is a cigar that delivers and meets the smoker’s expectations. And yes, if you ever get a chance to get your hands on some Montecristo No.4 don’t let the opportunity to fly away.
