Made In: Honduras
Size: 6-1/8 x 54
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Honduran & Nicaragua
PRE LIGHT: this belicoso was firmly packed and the head was interestingly thick and long. The wrapper was a mottled with dark splotches.(I have smoked others in this line and the wrapper did not have this)It was rustic and “vieny”.This blend was created as an answer to La gloria cubana’s serie R. I usually break this size up into thirds ,but the flavor profile was such that the first half and second half will cover this blend. so lets dive in….
FIRST HALF; the belicoso cut cleanly and the pre draw was smooth. The foot lit easily and completely.I was greeted with strong notes of dark cocoa smoked almonds(think emerald brand).there was also strong hints of cinnamon and spice. the plumes came off full and the flavor and bodie was a strong medium but not the full that is represented on the brands web site.the ash was clingy and thick with grey/white banding.
THE SECOND HALF; I had to relight at just over the halfway point but it stayed lit without any further problems. the ash on this stick came off about every inch and a half with regularity. It was flakey but the draw continued to be smooth. At this point the flavor took a decided turn to smoked cocoa almond flavor and was still at a strong medium for flavor and bodie. towards the end of this belicoso the notes of cinnamon and spice ramped back up and the finish was dry and clean on my pallet.
THE FINISH; so the question is this. Is this blend a contender with the serie R? No its in the ball park but not anywhere’s near La Gloria Cubana’s blend. That is not to say that this blend is not worth smoking. It was a stong medium that given 10 or 15 years ago would have rated a full. However in todays tobacco world there have been much stronger strains of tobacco that eclipse this. It may be that to older blenders this is considered full and the saint lius rey is an older brand. I enjoyed this smoke and would not hesitate to smoke one again. It’s a bargain at around 6.50$ a stick and you do get your bang for the buck. ALL THE BEST-SMOKINJOE
