Padron 3000 Maduro

Since I have the tendency to review new or hard to find sticks, I thought I would shake things up this week and review a cigar that has been a favorite for years. Ever since I started smoking cigars, I have enjoyed the Padron 3000 maduro on a fairly regular basis. God only knows how many boxes of these I have purchased and smoked in the 7 or so years that I have been a cigar smoker. But there is a very good reason for that.

The Padron 3000 maduro is a robusto sized, square press Nicaraguan puro with a nice chocolate brown wrapper. It has some nice oils on the wrapper as well as a bit of tooth. It smells of earth, cocoa and hay. The cold draw is a rich blend of cocoa and earth.

The first notes that hit my palate when the cigar is lit are wood, spice and cocoa. As I continue to smoke The wood and cocoa remain on the front of the palate with a finish that is spicy, rich and earthy. The retrohale is spicy but smooth and there are notes of cocoa in the aftertaste. The cocoa picks up after an inch adding to the rich flavors. Spice remains on back of palate. The smoke very rich and aromatic.

As I smoke the second third, spice picks up throughout the entire draw but it is balanced with cocoa and wood on the foreground. And mingles with earth on the finish. The smoke is still rich, earthy and spicy. At about halfway through, I notice leather in each draw. This remains consistent through the rest of this third.

Cocoa and leather are most noticeable in the concluding third. The spice is very subtle. Hints of spice remain in the after taste but it is mostly cocoa and leather. The retrohale at this point is still rich but not as spicy. The spice intensifies slightly in the final inch but it is not as pronounced as in the beginning. It definitely rounds out the flavors nicely through the end.

One of the things I appreciate the most about the Padron 3000 maduro is its consistency. Every time I have lit one up throughout my seven years of smoking, I have known what to expect and have never been disappointed. The burn, draw and construction are always flawless. And for under 5 bucks a stick it has some great flavor and body. I don’t see this being replaced in my favorites any time soon.
